Choosing the Right Aluminum Fence

Sterling Aluminum Fence defines the perimeter of a residential pool area

Few things make a pool or protected area look better than a solidly built, aluminum picket fence.  However, there is much to consider before settling on a particular brand or style.

Learn more about selecting the right fence for your property with this handy guide.

1.  Building Codes
  • Always be sure that the fence you purchase meets the building codes in your residential area.
  • Before selecting the height of your fence panels and posts, always consider any potential upgrades or outdoor renovations that might be executed in the future.  For example, if you purchase a three foot high fence today, and a few years down the road you decide to have a pool installed, you'll have to replace your current fence in order to meet code.  (Height requirements could range anywhere from 48 to 54 inches, depending on the building code in your area).
2.  Design/Finish
  • A tubular design helps to prevent unwanted pests/insects from infiltrating your fence.
  • Look for fences with concealed fasteners for a cleaner look.
  • Powdercoat paint has a stronger, harder coating to prevent scratches and is an excellent finish choice.
  • Choose a fence system made from heavy gauge aluminum for durability.
3.  Cost
  • The old saying is true:  You get what you pay for.  If the fence feels flimsy and seems poorly made, it probably is.  Do lots of research to ensure the enjoyment of your fence for many years to come.
4.  Manufacturer Reliability
  • Do a background check on longevity.  If the fence manufacturer has been around since the late eighteen hundreds or the early nineteen hundreds, the odds are in your favor that they'll be around to assist  - even decades after installation is completed.

* HELPFUL HINT:  Remember to have your property surveyed before your fence is installed.  Without clear boundaries in place, your fence could encroach upon your neighbors' property line(s).  In this case, demands can be made that your fence be moved at a moment's notice, costing you valuable time and money.

  1. I recently talked my parents into getting rid of their old wood fence that was missing pieces. They invested in an aluminum fence and love it. I told them it was a sturdy investment that would last for year to come and worth every penny.
